The Hobbit: A Timeless Classic and Steubenville’s Annual Celebration hosted by BookMarx Books each September.

When J.R.R. Tolkien first published The Hobbit in 1937, he likely had no idea that this charming children's story would evolve into one of the most beloved works of fantasy literature. The novel, subtitled There and Back Again, introduces readers to the rich world of Middle-earth and follows the journey of Bilbo Baggins, a humble hobbit who embarks on a grand adventure with a company of dwarves to reclaim their stolen treasure from the dragon Smaug.

Since its publication, The Hobbit has remained a cherished part of popular culture, beloved by readers of all ages. Its enduring charm lies in Tolkien's masterful world-building, the warmth of its characters, and its themes of bravery, friendship, and the unexpected heroism found in even the most unlikely of individuals.

But the magic of The Hobbit is not just contained within the pages of the book. Each year, in Steubenville, Ohio, fans of Tolkien’s work gather to celebrate the spirit of Bilbo Baggins’ adventure with a special event: Hobbit Party & J.R.R. Tolkien Celebration.

The Steubenville Tradition

For years, Steubenville has been home to this unique gathering of Tolkien enthusiasts. The event celebrates the anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit and brings together fans from near and far. Held each September, this local tradition transforms parts of the city into a whimsical celebration of Middle-earth, drawing inspiration from Tolkien’s vibrant characters and unforgettable world.

Congratulations to cake decorating contest winner Norah! She created a beautifully painted cake depicting The Shire and Bag End. The winning cake was called “A Taste of Bag End” with delicious flavors such as Earl Grey tea infused layers with orange meringue buttercream and black berry jam filling!

While it started as a small gathering of local fans, the Hobbit Anniversary Party has grown over the years. The festivities now include everything from costume wearing to themed feasts inspired by the seven daily meals enjoyed by hobbits in Tolkien’s lore. Participants dress as their favorite characters—whether hobbits, elves, wizards, or dwarves—and engage in activities like deep lectures, storytelling, and pipe & mug pottery, firecrackers, and cake decorating contests.

The centerpiece of the event is, of course, a communal potluck and cake decorating contest located in the 3rd floor hall of Leonardo’s Coffee.

Why Steubenville?

The answer lies in the deep appreciation the community has for literature, storytelling, and the shared joy of celebrating a common love for Tolkien’s work. In recent years, local fans have created a welcoming home for both die-hard Tolkien aficionados & newcomers alike. Recently, The Harmonium Project that serves the city in creating First Fridays on 4th partnered with the Steubenville Library system and ReCraft Steubenville in creating a pop-up Hobbit Hole, and while the event theme was “Storybook” an overwhelming majority of attendees dressed up in Tolkein themed costumes.

The Hobbit Hole was complete with the living room and fireplace hearth of Bilbo’s Bag-End, A sleeping dragon under a hoard of gold, and a photo-op with none-other than Tree Beard, the beloved Ent character from The Two Towers, 2nd book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The Ent was handcrafted by ReCraft Steubenville’s owner and local artist, Katie Takats over a number of late nights.

Tree Beard now resides in the shop window of BookMarx Books!
